Approximately 20-30 million Americans experience peripheral neuropathy.
What is peripheral neuropathy?
Peripheral neuropathy is nerve damage that can be caused by any one of a variety of things, including injuries, infections, vitamin deficiencies, genetic defects, and hormonal imbalances.
What are the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy?
Symptoms vary from patient to patient, but can include:
- Numbness
- Burning, stabbing, freezing, or tingling pain
- Muscle weakness in legs, feet, arms, or hands
- Severe sensitivity to touch
- Feels like you are wearing gloves or socks
- Difficulty walking, running, or arm movement
- Unbalanced and/or uncoordinated
- Difficulty holding things
- Foot dragging (aka foot drop)
- Overly high arches
- Curled “hammer” toes
How is peripheral neuropathy treated?
Different symptoms require different treatment, including:
Medications
In some cases, the problem can be resolved by medical injections, oral medications, patches, or slow-release medications.
Minimally invasive procedures
Nerve block injections and radiofrequency ablation target painful nerves.
Physical therapy
If you have difficulty adapting to nervous system changes, physical therapy can improve balance and decrease your risk of falling.
Wearable medical equipment & devices
Medical devices like walkers, canes, braces, prescription footwear, and more can prevent complications from peripheral neuropathy.
